So what's the deal here?

Welcome to the blog of Gwen, photographer/comic trapped in the body of an occasionally mild-mannered (but tenacious and dedicated) Reference Assistant. This is my effort to explore the true meaning of the 23 things designed to help us learn (master would be a bit too much for me to expect) Web 2.0.

"thing" no. 17: Learning 2.0 Sandbox wiki

When faced with the semi-daunting task of what to add to the Sandbox wiki, I took a step back: What's important to me? What -- or who -- is near and dear to my heart?

Rusty, my 15-year-old cockatiel, is the closest thing I'll ever have to a child. So I wrote my Sandbox piece about him, about birds. Before I forget; The format of Sandbox is a little gritty. The words are shoved together after posting. But as long as people can read it... That's something those who maintain that site may want to look at.

Back to Rusty. I got him when he was about two and a half months old. He's had kidney disease for several years, and I have to give him medicine orally twice a day. He doesn't like it. But I let him think he's in control, and then he usually swallows it, and then I distract him so he won't spit it out. Sometimes I lose. At the moment he's going through a molt. Little feathers, and some big, adorn his cage.

Without a doubt, Rusty can be ornery. He can be sweet. He can be stubborn as hell. Like when he doesn't want to return to his cage (which I sometimes call his house) and I have to get the green butterfly net I bought at the Morton Arboretum a couple of years ago and chase him down from the drapery rods.

Yes, Rusty's just like people. He's my best buddy.

Now that you ask, it's hard to put into words. Reserved at first, but tend to warm up with time. Hope never to lose my sense of humor... or my curiosity. A true wiseguy (there is another word that begins with an "s") pretty much since I could talk... Planning one of these days to return to the piano. Fascinated by the many ironies in (and of) life.

(Some of) my favorite things

  • Cross Creek (old flick)
  • Educating Rita (old flick)
  • Julia (old flick)
  • On the Waterfront (quite old flick)
  • Out of Africa (old flick)
  • The Verdict (I think this was my favorite Paul Newman movie.)
